Germany's FC Bayern Munich was defeated by a scoreline of 3-1 when they went down to BATE Borisov in the UEFA Champions League in Minsk, Belarus Oct. 2.
This was the first defeat in Europe for the Bavarians for the season, having won their opener 2-1 against CF Valencia on Sep 19.
Playing at the Borisov City Stadium the German side fell to strikes from Aleksandr Pavlov in the first half while Vitali Rodionov and Renan Bressan notched goals in the second half to sink the visitors.
Bayern's only reply came from French winger Franck Ribery in extra time.
The result leaves the multiple Bundesliga champions in third place with three points on goal difference just behind Spain's CF Valencia and above France's LOSC Lille Metropole who sit bottom with no points after two games played.
The Germans sit in third because of Valencia's 2-0 win over Lille at the "Estadio Mestalla," in Spain. That gave the Spanish outfit their first points of the campaign.
This defeat to the Belorussians is the first time Bayern Munich has loss in Europe since their defeat in the final last term at the hands of Chelsea on penalty kicks at England's Wembley Stadium.
Bayern captain Phillip Lahm told the official Bayern website before the game.
"This will be a difficult away game, but we want to build on what we have done so far this season, that much is clear."
Bayern Munich currently sits on top of the German Bundesliga with Eintracht Frankfurt the closest to them in second.
The next UEFA Champions league tie for the Bavarian outfit will be against bottom side Lille Oct. 23.
