The cast of HBO Girls was given the rare opportunity of renewing the series for a fourth year, before Season 3 even premiered, which probably is a good thing given the shows slouching ratings. Lena Dunham isn’t worried, however. Lena is too busy having to publicly recap the reasoning behind agreeing to appear on the cover of Vogue. The constant defense of her art is starting to have take its toll on Dunham fragile mental state.
Despite the lagging ratings, Season 3 premiered to just 1.1 million viewers according to Breit Bart, Girls will be on the air for at least one more year.
The network announced before the show's newest season even aired that they would be pulling the trigger on another year's worth of episodes, according to the Hollywood Reporter:
"A network spokesperson announced at the top of its Television Critics Association winter press tour panel that it has already renewed Girls for another round. It will film in New York later this year, with a 2015 premiere planned."
Not that Dunham had much time to celebrate. Shortly following the network's news, Lena graced the cover of Vogue only to be met with a firestorm of criticism.
After Jezebel released the unphotoshopped cover photo, which led some to question why Lena would subject her image to that censorship in the first place, Dunham spoke out in defense of what she still felt was a daring move (via Time):
"I know that I felt really like Vogue supported me and wanted to put a depiction of me on the cover. I never felt bullied into anything; I felt really happy because they dressed me and styled me in a way that really reflects who I am. And I felt that was very lucky and that all the editors understood my persona, my creativity and who I am. I haven't been keeping track of all the reactions, but I know some people have been very angry about the cover and that confuses me a little. I don't understand why, photoshop or no, having a woman who is different than the typical Vogue cover girl, could be a bad thing."
Rumor has it that, despite Dunham's strong veneer, she is starting to crack under the pressure.
A good friend of the director told Star her friends and family were starting to worry about her:
"She is her own worst critic and will work night and day on the show. It takes a toll. Her family doesn't want her to become a prisoner of her own mind again...The truth is that she's very fragile-and everyone is just fearful that the pressure will send her spiraling down."
Let's hope Lena can make it through one more year.
