'Witness Uganda' Takes Home Another Richard Rogers Award for Production in Musical Theater, Opening Soon in Cambridge

Matt Gould and Griffin Matthews co-wrote Witness Uganda--a story of a young New York City local named Griffin who volunteers for a Ugandan project to try and change the world. The play, now, has garnered enough attention and praise to receive the coveted Richard Rogers Production Award for Musical Theater.

Word from the head offices at the American Academy of Arts and Letters trickled down to news outlets on February 3. The announcement left theater goers feeling vindicated.

Witness Uganda explores concepts which delve into the legitimacy and feasibility of trying to change the world and the complex realities that come with it. I say, that is quite a heavy plot for the small stage.

The intent of the award, though, is "to nurture talented composers and playwrights by enabling their musical to be produced in New York City."

This wouldn't be the play's first award, either. Witness Uganda received considerable recognition after receiving the Richard Rogers Staged Reading Award in 2012, also presenting in 2013 by A.R.T at Playwrights Horizon.

The play just premiered on February 4 and continues its run at the American Repertory Theater in Cambridge, Mass. Official opening starts February 12 and continues through March 16.

To wit, here is a preview from A.R.T. for Witness Uganda.
