Off the back of the Los Angeles Philharmonic opening gala on Thursday September 27 at the Walt Disney Concert Hall, an event that saw stirring symphonies, awesome ballet and a fine dining all took in by Hollywood's finest, like Huger Games star Jacqueline Emerson and Chris O'Donnell from CBS NCIS: Los Angeles. Gustavo Dudamel was at again. Having masterminded the event prior Dudamel was all about business the next day.
Friday, September 28 saw the Los Angeles Philharmonic back into tune with Dudamel directing traffic once again by showcasing songs like Russian composer Igor Stravinsky's, "Rites of Springs," as well as new compositions from composer Steven Stucky.
On Friday night the LA Times said. "Dudamel offered a commanding performance, one very different from any of his predecessors." This came after the Venezuelan conducted the "Rites of Spring."
You felt the "Rite," come through the floor and the seats, you sensed a tingling atmosphere in the hall, which is as it should be in Disney," said LA Times.
When it came to Steven Stucky's work the Dudamel stayed true to the layered composition often associated with the composer.
"Stucky tends to be a sanguine composer; no matter how serious the score, some sunshine can usually be counted on," said LA Times. Despite this element in Steven Stucky's work, Dudamel delivered a strong performance.
Firstly the master conductor guided Marion Arthur Kuszyk through a wonderful oboe solo to usher the crowd into the schemings of Stucky. Dudamel then brought about the composer's powerful "Outcry." Followed by the shimmering "Flight," that delighted the audience. Stucky's work was well done by the L.A. Phil, as the composer is well known with his workings with the orchestra. As he spent many years associated with the California base outfit as a resident composer.
Gustavo Dudamel has gotten the L.A. Phil up and running with their first performance of the classical season, there is no doubt the Disney Concert Hall is bound to be packed in recent weeks if the conductor and his troops carry on in the same way.
