Georges Bizet Carmen premieres tonight are the Metropolitan. Bizet's ultra-popular tale is a favorite among opera goers so producer Richard Eyre will be in for a task as he tries to replicate this 18 century classic.
Eyre's rendition of Frenchman's master class will be played out over a couple of months at the Met starting tonight September 28 and will run all the way down to early next year when it closes March 1, 2013.
The British Director has enlisted Georgian Anita Racvelishvili to play as Carmen in the leading role alongside Yonghoon Lee as Don Jose. Micaela has been given to Kate Royal and Kyle Ketelsen will display his talents as Escamillo.
Eyre updates Bizet's original composition by fast forwarding the timeline from the 1830s to the Spanish Civil War in the 1930s but the Seville setting still remains the same.
The wily Carmen gestures for the attention of Don Jose in the best ways she knows how and stokes a jealous rage within the soldier by flirting with the likes of Escamillo the bullfighter and dropping seeds of doubt around Don Jose before he does away with the enchanting gypsy in the end.
With the Metropolitan tasting success already this season with L'Elisir d'Amore, The Huffington Post referring to the opera as a delightful staging of an enchanting opera, Eyre and company will look to impress at Carmen's debut tonight. On the heels of Eyre's production comes Il Trovatore and Turnadot on the September 29 so a strong showing is vital.
This is the second coming of Richard Eyre's Carmen to the Met. Following its season debut at the Manhattan venue, the Spanish story will make its return to the venue on Tuesday, October 2.
