"What better way to kick off the season than with a tuneful, humane comedy that sends the audience out of the opera house smiling...," said AP.
L'Elisir d'Amore at the Metropolitan Opera House is off to a smashing success. Gaetano Donizetti's L'Elisir d'Amore recreated by producer Bartlett Sher opened up to wondrous cheers this opera season. The Met first rolled out the Italian piece September 24 and the Donizetti classic will be replicated at the venue until October 13.
Set in rural Italy the Donizetti classic centers around young Adina and the shy Nemorino with the latter trying to win the hand of the former by way of a love potion he acquires from a traveler.
Anna Netrebko plays Adina in the Sher feature while Matthew Polenzani takes on the role of her beloved Nemorino. The comedic opera has taken the emblem as a must see at the Metropolitan with the two stars grabbing a bunch of plaudits
"Netrebko and Polenzani turned almost everything they sang into gold and silver, especially their hot-hot declaration scene, when she grabs him and he sinks to his knee exclaiming 'Gioia.' And the tender beauty of Polenzani's 'Una furtiva lagrima' was probably the highest of the highlights." said Theatermania.
Donizetti romantic-comedic opera is three Acts long. Bartlett Sher has the viewing of L'Elisir d'Amore at the Metropolitan in the span of about two hours and 41 minutes with Sher getting a share of the congratulations. "A delightful staging of an enchanting opera," said the Huffington Post.
The next playing of L'Elisir d'Amore is on October 1 at the Metropolitan Opera House.
