Madison Square Garden renovation will give it a classic feel but no classical music concerts.
Renovation to Madison Square Garden will give the iconic New York arena a smart new look. It will be bigger, flashier and more luxurious and will look to separate itself from the new Barclays Center a few klicks away in Brooklyn and stamp its dominance as the city's marquee stadium. My question is can a world class venue be classy if classical music is not chiming out from its doors?
Madison Square Garden has in the past held court with classical music playing center but this year, well the end of the year sees no sonatas or renditions coming from the home of the New York Knicks (NBA), New York Liberty (WNBA) and the ever entertaining New York Rangers (NHL). One can argue that with three professional sports teams plying their traded in the same stadium the higher ups couldn't possibly pencil in anything else but that's not true. The venue is home to countless acts throughout the year from every genre of music, to Justin Bieber to Nas. Country, folk, rap, pop, techno, reggae and dancehall feature annually.
Classical music seems at least for now has been benched. Which seems a little odd seeing New York is a great venue for the genre and the city will be entering into a cavalcade of the classical in this the fall and winter months. The venue has played host to such notes before but nothing is slated for this upcoming season in New York. In contrast the Barclays Center is ready to welcome Famous Tuscan tenor Andrea Bocelli in December.
An extension of The Garden, Radio City Music Hall is known for its stunning events like the Rockettes. A perfect place for the classics but they too have nothing to offer except the odd musical. That being said New York is a city that has many wonderful places for the genre. So it equates for now but MSG will welcome a return to classical music soon, a place where acts like Jay-Z and Coldplay grips crowds.
