The Nutcracker Ballet NYC: Promises Fantasy and Fun

The generational favorite the Nutcracker returns to the New York stage.

As the land turns to frost and freeze our minds are moved to a mystic and wondering place. A child's place, it's hard not to be captivated as snow cascades from the chilled celeste above. To herald this wonderful transformation from bright to white, ballets the world over reenact the splendid play the Nutcracker. One part of the world that has fallen in love with the Tchaikovsky driven master class is the Big Apple. Various themes and interpretations have been done over time but New York is where the Nutcracker can be called a staple.

The New York City Ballet (NYCB) will be performing this annual delight through the winter period from the tail end of November starting on the 23 of the month to December 30, at the world class David H. Koch Theater. The two tier ballet of Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov will have George Balanchine master choreographer adding his own flair to the piece as Tchiakovsky offers the rhythm all movement is hinged on. The NYCB has ferried in 90 of its most elite dancers, 62 maestros of music and 50 young students to give life to this classic European piece.

The original Nutcracker and the Mouse King is a fanciful ballet about centered around Christmas time where children's imagination runs wild with excitement. The Nutcracker, is the cherished toy of the young protagonist (Clara). Story goes something like this, her sibling breaks her most prized possession in the Nutcracker, from there the fantasy comes alive as he the Nutcracker becomes animated to fight off an army of mice led by the Mouse King alongside a gang of gingerbread soldiers and that is just the first act.

Balanchine promises a gigantic Christmas tree a sight that should have eyes constantly on an upward gaze and a monolith Gingerbread Mother that needs three artisans to maneuver. Audiences will be whisked away to a journey to the classic Kingdom of the Sugar Plum Fairy on a beautifully crafted chariot engineered by Mr. George Balanchine all winter long.
