Jazz pianist Vijay Iyer might just be the kind of badass we need in our Sun Ra-less lives.
Not only has he garnered numerous citations--DownBeat's International Critics' Poll awarded him Jazz Artist of the Year and Pianist of the Year, to name but two--but he's also slated to become a professor at Harvard University soon.
Lest we forget, too, he just won that John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation Genius Grant.
Yes, indeed, Vijay Iyer is a true renaissance man.
If, like Classicalite, you've been blinded by his light, then you must check out the Vijay Iyer Trio at their Jazz at Lincoln Center debut this weekend.
The event takes place on January 24 and 25 at the Allen Room, 10 Columbus Circle.
Doors open at 7 p.m. Tickets start at a mere $45.
To wit, care of our friends at NPR Music, here is Iyer's trio live at New York's Winter Jazzfest.
