Greg Kinnear is known for his ability to conquer both dramatic and comedic movie roles, in all kinds of movies from the christian-themed Heaven Is for Real to the irreverent Little Miss Sunshine. So it makes perfect sense that he would make his television series debut by playing a character that blends the pathetic with the honorable. Rake premieres tomorrow at 9 p.m. on Fox.
Greg Kinnear seems so fit to play the role of attorney Keegan Deane in Fox’s new legal drama, that you might might think the part was written for him, but it wasn’t. This is the American version of a crossover Australian hit, like Wilfred or Mel Gibson.
That doesn’t mean that the part wasn’t practically written for him. Kinnear told the Mercury News that the part really appealed to him:
“To me, he wasn't built like a typical television protagonist. And so that was kind of what appealed to me. But, you know, the good thing is he probably doesn't charge very much for representation...There are a lot of episodes where he learns nothing and makes sizable mistakes and recognizes it. But I think at the end of the day, he's brilliant at his work, despite the other self-destructive parts of his life."
That is a pretty informative insight into the show and it’s direction, but what is it about?
On the official website, Fox describes it as dramatic laugher with a heart of gold:
“RAKE, a bold new legal drama based on the Australian Film Institute Award nominee for Best Television Drama series of the same name, follows the comedic and chaotic life of criminal defense lawyer KEEGAN DEANE (Academy Award nominee and Emmy Award winner Greg Kinnear...His ex-wife calls him “unreliable”; to his fellow lawyers he's 'an obstruction'; judges think he's “an outrage”; the IRS calls him a 'defendant'; his bookie says he's a “pain in the ass”; and to his former dealer, he's simply a 'tragic loss.'
That really doesn't describe much other than a loveable rogue. Guess we’ll have to wait until tomorrow to really find out. Or watch the Australian version of YouTube...yuck.
