Today there was a deadly shooting at Purdue. While little details are known about the suspect, the police have reported that the shooter has been apprehended. There was a single fatality from the attack, and the university has decided to remain open.
At around noon today, a gunman shot and killed a student who was attending a class at Purdue's West Lafayette campus.
Specifically, the incident occurred at the Electrical Engineering Building.
Police are assuring students that the shooter was targeting only one individual, and as a result, Purdue is keeping open the remainder of the campus, as they revealed on Twitter:
"UPDATE: The EE building remains closed by police, other campus buildings are now open & the shelter in place order has been lifted. #Purdue"
Mike Pence, the Governor of Indiana, where Purdue is located, issued the following statement. While the governor recognized the tragedy at hand, he also took time to praise law enforcement's response to the situation (via LA Times):
"Today's shooting at Purdue University is a tragedy, and our heartfelt condolences go out to the family of the victim and to everyone in the Purdue community. I commend the professionalism of the West Lafayette Police Department in apprehending the suspect and bringing the situation to a swift conclusion. The Indiana State Police are on the scene and will continue to assist local law enforcement with the ongoing investigation."
20-year-old Kirk Choquette, a sophomore at the university, also spoke to LA Times, where he revealed his confusion. At first, Kirk thought the gunshots were just an unruly student banging on the walls:
"Initially I didn't think they were gunshots. I thought someone was just banging on the wall on the wall ... then I heard cops yell, 'Get down.'"
Hopefully, this was an isolated incident. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of the victim, as well as the entire student body of Purdue.
