The verdict is in. While the cousin-kissing hate speech might impress the semi-literate friends of the Robertson family, most of America did not find it the epitome of whit. The cast of A&E Duck Dynasty stood by papa Phil's homophobic and racist rants during the show's season break. With the Season 5 premiere’s vanishing ratings, it is apparent that the television audience did not.
It is now widely known that has Phil Robertson insisted Jim Crow-era blacks loved the apartheid South, and girls should be married before the age of sixteen.
But, what will keep people talking long after the show is off the air is Phil’s wildly offensive anti-gay remarks in GQ:
"Start with homosexual behavior and just morph out from there. Bestiality, sleeping around with this woman and that woman and that woman and those men. Don't be deceived. Neither the adulterers, the idolaters, the male prostitutes, the homosexual offenders, the greedy, the drunkards, the slanderers, the swindlers--they won't inherit the kingdom of God. Don't deceive yourself. It's not right...It seems like, to me, a vagina--as a man--would be more desirable than a man's anus. That's just me. I'm just thinking...But hey, sin: It's not logical, my man. It's just not logical.”
Even though most people with ears thought that it was in poor taste, the Robertson brood stuck by ole ignorant a-- Phil.
Due to the families solidarity, A&E panicked and lifted Phil’s 9-day suspension, so the network wouldn’t lose the cash cow.
Turns out they might should have saved a little face and let the turd get flushed.
The show’s Season 5 premiered to the sound of people changing the channel. According to TV Line, the show lost over a third of its viewership, on what should have been their biggest night thus far:
“The Season 5 premiere of the A&E phenom drew 8.5 million viewers, down sharply from the nearly 12 million that tuned in for the Season 4 opener last year. Among 18-49, the back-to-back episodes dipped 33 percent to 4.2 million viewers.”
At least, you still have the ducks!
