TNT's breakout show Major Crimes murdered the ratings. This is, in large part, due to an amazing cast that features Mary McDonnell, Tony Denison and GW Bailey.
TV by the Numbers, one of the more credible ratings sources, claims that the cable show closed out to much higher ratings than initially expected:
"TNT's hit original series Major Crimes closed out its second season Monday night with 5.4 million viewers in Live + Same Day delivery, a +10% increase over the prior week. The drama, which has ranked as basic cable's #1 original series for four consecutive weeks, beat its Monday competition to rank as the top cable program of the night. Among TNT's targeted demos, the season finale of Major Crimes scored 1.4 million adults 25-54 in Live + Same Day (+6% vs. the prior week) and 1.1 million adults 18-49 (+4%)."
That's great news for the cable program, ensuring that the series will be renewed for seasons to come.
In case you've never seen the program, which focuses on the American Justice system, the show's producers provide the following synopsis of the program:
"Following the departure of Deputy Chief Brenda Leigh Johnson from the LAPD, Captain Sharon Raydor (McDonnell) is selected as the new head of its fictional Major Crimes Division. Throughout the first season, she faces the challenge of earning the trust and loyalty of her officers, who are still in shock over Johnson's exit, while trying to close the department's highest-profile cases. Ambitious young detective Amy Sykes also joins Major Crimes...Raydor decides to house Rusty Beck, the key witness for the Stroh case, in her own home, paying for him to attend the Catholic high school her children attended. In season 2, DDA Emma Rios is introduced as part of the prosecution team on the Stroh case."
