‘Professor’ Russell Johnson Dead at 89 After Josh Gad's 'Gilligan’s Island' Reboot Announcement

Television lost another great personality on this week. Russell Johnson, the man who played the Professor on the hit 1960’s series,Gilligan’s Island, passed away on Thursday. However, his character will live on. Frozen star Josh Gad is reportedly heading up a reboot Gilligan's Island movie.

Russell Johnson, best known for his role as the Professor on Gilligan’s Island passed away, at the age of 89 on Thursday. Johnson died of liver failure. He is survived by his wife Constance, and his daughter, Kim, and his stepson, Court Dane. Johnson also had one grandson.

His widow, Constance Johnson, confirmed news of his death with ABC News:

"He died at home, peaceful, in his sleep at 5:21 am today. [He was] a very brave guy who knew what he wanted, and he wanted to be at home."

Before he landed the classic role on Gilligans Island, Johnson starred in a number of Westerns, often playing the bad guy.

Johnson’s most iconic role will live on for a brand new generation. Frozen star and Book of Mormon actor Josh Gad is reportedly in line to write and star in a modern day movie remake of the show.

Johnson previously spoke with the Archive of American Television, about what a modern day Gilligans Island would look like:

"I've had people in the ensuing years say to 'if they did Gilligan's Island today you'd all be living in the same tent,It's true. That innocence was kept and it worked."
