Surely Sean Penn isn’t the only celebrity who cares about helping Haiti. Daniel Craig, James Bond in the recent blockbuster Skyfall, works with Artists for Peace and Justice through Hope for Haiti to rebuild schools in the island nation devastated by catastrophic earthquake in 2010.
Non-profit organization Artists for Peace and Justice has organized caring celebrities to help launch the Hope for Haiti campaign. The group counts celebrities Jennifer Aniston, Sean Penn, Olivia Wilde, Susan Sarandon, Demi Moore and Daniel Craig among it’s members.
Hope for Haiti strives to do what Jesus would do to help rebuild Haiti according to the mission statement on their official website:
“To demonstrate Christian compassion to poverty-bound Haitian children and their families, providing opportunities for these children to become leaders in their homes, churches, and communities.”
Though good people have been working hard in Haiti to help improve living conditions, they still have a long way to go to before school is truly publicly available, according to the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs, Republic of Haiti (via Hope for Haiti):
“Due to weak state provision of education services, private and parochial schools account for approximately 90% of primary schools, and only 65% of primary school-aged children are actually enrolled. At the secondary level, the figure drops to around 20%. Less than 35% of those who enter will complete primary school. Though Haitians place a high value on education, few can afford to send their children to secondary school and primary school enrollment is dropping due to economic factors."
Daniel Craig explained to OK! why the project was close to his heart at a holiday event in NYC:
“Education seems to me such a great thing to do, because it’s a long-term thing and hopefully the benefits will be seen for years to come.”
Take that Wyclef.
