Cellist Laura van der Heijden, 15, has won the BBC's Young Musician prize for 2012.
The teenager was announced as the winner Sunday at the end of the competition’s final at The Sage Gateshead in England. Heijden played Walton's Cello Concerto at the final performance with the Northern Sinfonia conducted by Kirill Karabits
Accepting her trophy with the £2,000 prize, Heijden said she felt "amazing" and "so, so lucky."
Born in England, van der Heijden began her cello studies at six and has been studying with Leonid Gorokhov since 2008.
The BBC Young Musician competition is held every two years for British percussion, keyboard, string, brass, and woodwind players who are eighteen years of age or under.
Other finalists of this year were a pianist Yuanfan Yang and the final's first-ever recorder player, Charlotte Barbour-Condini.
