TONIGHT: The National Endowment for the Arts' Jazz Masters concert will be broadcast as scheduled.
For the fourth year in a row, jazz fans are invited to watch the show via Livestream at arts.gov or jalc.org/neajazzmasters (an archive of the event will be posted at arts.gov the following day).
Presented by the National Endowment for the Arts and Jazz at Lincoln Center, the ceremony will be hosted by acclaimed trumpeter and JALC artistic director Wynton Marsalis and journalist Soledad O'Brien at Lincoln Center in New York City. The event will showcase performances from previous Jazz Masters like Kenny Barron, Jimmy Heath, Dave Liebman and Jimmy Owens.
Among this year's honorees, Jamey Aebersold will perform alongside recent winners of the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition.
"The art of jazz is passed from one generation to the next, as older musicians act as mentors and teachers to younger ones," says Victoria Hutter. "The mentoring tradition is exemplified this year by the inclusion of winners of the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition."
Other noted musicians and teachers--pianist Keith Jarrett, composer Anthony Braxton, bassist Richard Davis--will also be honored at the ceremony.
The Jazz Master award is the highest national honor a jazz musician can receive. Musicians receive the award for their lifetime achievements, contributions and advancements to the art form.
Honorees will be granted a one-time fellowship of $25,000.
