When France’s first lady Valerie Trierweiler heard the news of her partner, socialist President Francois Hollande, having an affair, she immediately became so despondent that she asked to be taken to the hospital. She spent the weekend there recovering from the tabloid revelation. The real question is now that she is out, where is she going to go?
Things are definitely a little different in France. Politicians nor the public are terribly upset with Hollande’s philandering, but they think is he’s moved on, then Trierweiler should move out.
No one seems, other than Trierweiler, to care at all about his cheating. The public’s opinion, which has been at a record low for months, has not been noticeably affected.
His fellow politicians, always keen to exploit a scandal, have come out in defense of his right to privacy. The leader of the far-right party National Front Party, Marine Le Pen, stood behind the president (via BBC):
"As long as it doesn't cost the taxpayer a penny...I believe everyone has the right to have their private life respected. There is no reason why the media should take it upon themselves to reveal a person's private life, provided their political activity is not affected."
In fact, if anyone is taking heat, it’s Hollande's official partner first lady Valerie Trierweiler. The respected political weekly Le Point is running an online poll that indicates the vast majority of the public want him to formally split with Trierweiler.
If Hollande was to make his mistress his new main dame, Trierweiler would be the first first lady ever thrown out of Elysee Palace. MP Jean-Christophe Lagarde voiced the thoughts of many, when he weighed in on the precarious status of the first lady position (via Daily Mail):
“She is not the wife of the president of the Republic, she plays the role of the first lady of France, when it appears that there is another first lady. The situation needs to be clarified very rapidly.”
So, apparently in France people aren’t concerned that their president was cheating. They just want to know when he’s moving that fine young thing into the big house.
