2004 Miss Venezuela Monica Spear, along with her ex-husband, was senselessly murdered earlier this week. The bandits even shot the couple’s 5-year-old daughter. Though she has been reported to be stable and recovering, she didn’t attend her mother's funeral today. The family is still uncertain about the little girls future.
Monica Spear, along with her ex-husband, 39-year-old British national Thomas Berry and their little girl, were on vacation, travelling at night from the city of Merida to the capital, Caracas, when their car hit something in the road that punctured at least two of the four tires according to police.
The couple were still waiting for road assistance to get them back on the road, when according to police, a gang of around 4 or 5 men showed up attempting to rob the couple.
As the couple fled to their car for safety, they were shot to death. Their daughter was shot in the leg and taken immediately taken to the hospital.
Mr. Thomas Berry Sr. told the Mail Online that the family is still uncertain where the best place for their newly orphaned girl is (via Hollywood Life):
“We still don’t yet know whether Maya will remain in Caracas with us or go to Orlando to live with Monica’s parents. We will discuss it with her family once the parents have been seen off properly. For the moment Maya is staying with some of Monica’s cousins in Caracas. The most important thing is that she is safe.”
The political leaders in Venezuela are seizing this moment to try and reform Venezuela's culture of violence.
Opposition leader Henrique Capriles posted a message on his Twitter account calling for a joint effort to curb the violence:
"Nicolas Maduro, I suggest we put aside our deep differences and get together to fight the lack of security, as one bloc."
President Nicolas Maduro has made it loud and clear in an official statement that justice will be done (BBC News):
"We were evaluating the cruelty with which the suspects acted. Violence is an evil that we have. There will be no tolerance to those who carry out acts like that, killing decent men and women, who have a right to live."
Let’s hope something can be done to stop the violence in Venezuela.
