The Chicago Symphony Orchestra (CSO) has appointed Alexander Hanna, 26, as its new principal bassist.
CSO music director Riccardo Muti announced Monday that Hanna, current principal bass of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, will start his new position in Chicago next month. Hanna succeeds Joseph Guastafeste who retired from the CSO last year after 49 years of service.
"I'm really excited about it," said Hanna in an interview with the Detroit Free Press.
"The Chicago Symphony is one of the greatest orchestras in the world … and playing with them is something I've always dreamed of. Obviously, I can't turn down the opportunity to join that orchestra as principal bass.”
Hanna, a native of Bowling Green, Ohio, studied at the Curtis Institute of Music with Hal Robinson and Edgar Meyer. He has performed with the Philadelphia Orchestra, Cleveland Orchestras, and Boston Symphony Orchestra. Hanna was also a prize-winning Fellow at the Tanglewood Music Center.
His final performances with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra will be at the season-ending concerts this weekend.
