‘GMA’ Cancer Survivor Gay Robin Roberts Comes Out with Girlfriend Amber Laign

Good Morning America’s Robin Roberts has had a fairly tough time these past two years. She was diagnosed with a rare and life threatening blood disease. One year into remission, the cancer survivor felt compelled to announce that she was gay. The reason she comes out now, is that she wanted to publicly thank her girlfriend of 10 years, Amber Laign, for helping her through the difficult time.

Roberts has kept her sexual orientation as close to her chest as she possibly can.

Even peers and colleagues were not aware that she was gay or involved in a decade long romantic relationship with a woman.

That all changed last Dec. 29, when the star decided to let the world know via her Facebook account, that things have changed for her since her recovery.

The 53-year-old Roberts wanted to start off the new year thanking someone who she has always, before now, left out:

“I am grateful for my entire family, my longtime girlfriend Amber, and friends as we prepare to celebrate a glorious new year together.”

It wasn’t overly sentimental, but it got the job done. And, for a relationship that has been on the down low for a decade, she chose a surprisingly public forum to make her announcement.

It was public enough to be picked up on a lot of folks' social radars.

It seems everyone has been clamoring to congratulate Roberts for her courage. White House first lady Michelle Obama even gave her a pat on the back via Twitter:

“I am so happy for you and Amber. You continue to make us all proud.”

That’s impressive. She didn’t do that for Lance Bass.
