Chelsea Manning, formerly known as Bradley, may have been given an unjust prison sentence, but that wasn’t enough to dissuade the whistleblowing Edward Snowden. As a result of his recent revelations, the civil rights hero has been asked to testify before a European parliament committee about the NSA spying.
Appropriately enough, today’s headline comes from The Guardian, the same publication that made history when they published Glenn Greenwald’s articles on the spying of innocent US citizens by their own government.
Since then, however, it has been revealed that the NSA has been spying on the citizens of other countries as well. This has naturally lead to an investigation by a European parliament committee that has officially reached out to Edward Snowden, as the publication explains:
“The justice and civil liberties committee voted 36-2 with one abstention on Thursday to seek testimony from the former NSA contractor, who has exposed the reach of the US secret surveillance apparatus...The investigation is aimed at drafting policy recommendations to better protect the privacy of European citizens and improve IT security in EU institutions.”
As of the writing of this article, it’s unclear whether Snowden will be able to virtually attend the conference. Attending in person is clearly off bounds, considering how badly the Obama administration wants their hands on the young man.
After all, several months ago they sentenced Chelsea Manning to 35 years in prison. At the time, however, he was going by Bradley.
Shortly after sentencing, the whistleblower made a revelation that caught many by surprise:
"As I transition into this next phase of my life, I want everyone to know the real me. I am Chelsea Manning. I am a female. Given the way that I feel, and have felt since childhood, I want to begin hormone therapy as soon as possible. I hope that you will support me in this transition."
