We can all rest assured now, thanks to the local prosecutor's office in Albertville, France, that Michael Schumacher’s near fatal accident was no real fault of his own. The retired race car driver’s fall, which has resulted in a week long coma, was caused by a rock, not excessively speeding.
The racing legend's status hasn’t really changed at all following his stabilizing, after a second round of operations earlier in the week.
Schumacher’s representative has urged the media to avoid speculating on his condition. According to her, the only report to trust is the official statement released by Schumacher’s physicians at Centre Hospitalier Universitaire, but that hasn’t been updated in days (via DW.de):
“The clinical state of Michael Schumacher is stable as he's under permanent care and treatment. However, the medical team in charge stresses that it continues to assess his situation as critical."
The local prosecutor's office, however, hasn’t wasted anytime reporting what news they have gathered so far. According to a brief translation in the Mirror, the accident wasn’t caused by any out-of-control speeds:
“Speed's not an important aspect for us...He's obviously a very good skier. At one point his skiis hit a rock and he falls forward. He hits his head about three metres below.”
Though they have been able to answer some of the questions surrounding the tragic accident, they need the helmet cam that was on Schumacher’s helmet, to determine exactly what transpired. Prosecutor Patrick Quincy explained (via The Mirror):
“We will take advantage of this film in order to be able to once again recreate the situation. We will then know specifically the path Mr Schumacher followed...This film will continue to be examined--in that way we will be able to establish with as much precision as much as possible what took place."
