Orange Is the New Black is one of hottest new shows on...well...not TV exactly. The Netflix original series is gearing up for a second season return in 2014 and fans can not get enough of the hit series. One of the show's breakout stars is transgender woman, Laverne Cox. Cox is using her time in the spotlight to bring light to a lot of issues affecting the LGBT community. Laverne Cox and Trans model Carmen Carrera were recently guest on Katie Couric’s show, where they spoke out for their community.
Laverne Cox and Katie Couric were recently guests on Kaite Couric’s new show where they opened up about being transgender in todays world.
Earlier in an interview, Couric spoke with Carmen Carrera about her surgery. Carrera, however, didn’t feel comfortable talking openly about the issue saying, “I don’t want to talk about it, it’s really personal.”
However, Laverne Cox later stepped in and set Couric straight about some of the pressing issues affecting trangerder people:
“I do feel there is a preoccupation with that. The preoccupation with transition and surgery objectifies trans people. And then we don’t get to really deal with the real lived experiences. The reality of trans people’s lives is that so often we are targets of violence. We experience discrimination disproportionately to the rest of the community. Our unemployment rate is twice the national average; if you are a trans person of color, that rate is four times the national average. The homicide rate is highest among trans women. If we focus on transition, we don’t actually get to talk about those things.”
