Marvel is gearing up to kick off it’s Phase Three plans in 2015 with Edgar Wright's Ant-Man, or should we say Ant-Men. The newest rumor is that Wright will be compressing decades of comic book stories into one film, with two Ant-Men. Meanwhile, the Avengers 2: Age of Ultron's titular villain will not tie-into the Ant-Man film.
If you are one of the massies that went gaga over Shawn of the Dead, then you might understand Edgar Wright's logic a little better. The issue comes from Edgar Wright’s comments on why Hank “Ant-Man” Pym will not be building the villain Ultron. In the comics, Pym and Ultron have a father/son relationship, if that son was Oedipus.
However, the upcoming Avengers 2: Age of Ultron is planning to skip out of Ultron’s origins and instead have Iron Man stand in for his creator, because the whole Iron Man’s inventions being used against him thing hasn’t gotten old after four films.
When Wright was asked about why Ant-Man wouldn’t be involved with Ultron by The Huffington Post, he stated:
"You know, when I was younger I used to love Tim Burton's Batman. I was like 15 and even then I was aware, 'This is really the Joker's film.' It's like, the Joker just takes over and Batman, you really don't learn too much about him. Comics have years to explain this stuff and in a movie you have to focus on one thing. So it's about kind of streamlining, I think. Some of the most successful origin films actually have a narrower focus. You cannot put 50 years of the Marvel universe into a movie. It's impossible."
Now here is the most confusing part. The new rumor, sparked by Wright himself, is that there will be two Ant-Men in the new movie. In the comics, Scott Lang (the second Ant-Man) stole Hank Pym's (the first Ant-Man) shrinking tech. Wright has already described the movie as a heist film on several occasions.
So Ultron can not be in the Ant-Man movie because he will outshine Ant-Man but Ant-Man can be out shined by another Ant-Man. Ah, gotta love Marvel logic.
