Director Martin Scorsese has endured his fair share of criticism along with his accolades during his illustrious career. The New York City native is known for his portrayal of violence in his films, though it is doubtful that the Oscar winner ever had to take as brutal a verbal assault as he did the other night outside the Academy Samuel Goldwyn Theater. As the acclaimed director stepped from the elevator, on his way to a Q&A following a screening Wolf of Wall Street, a disgusted screenwriter confronted the 71-year-old.
Though the attack must have come as a shock to Scorsese, it is hard to believe that he didn't expect some sort of backlash. He recently noted to The Wrap that the film might not be to everyone’s liking (via Daily Mail):
"It's brutal. I've seen it with audiences, and I think it plays. I don't know if it will be to everyone's taste--I don't think it will. It's not made for 14 year olds."
Apparently, it may not find its audience with everyone above the age of 14 either.
Old as the hills and long time industry peer of Scorsese, 75-year-old actress Hope Holiday, who saw the film and the tongue lashing, posted her eyewitness account on Facebook (via Telegraph and Argus):
"Last night was torture at the Academy--The Wolf Of Wall Street--three hours of torture--same disgusting c*** over and over again--after the film they had a discussion which a lot of us did not stay for--the elevator doors opened and Leonardo D. Martin S. and a few others got out then a screenwriter ran over to them and started screaming-shame on you-disgusting.”
Lets hope the film has more traction among the 15 to 74-year-old demographic.
