Preservation Hall Jazz Band Marks 50 Years at New Orleans Jazz Fest

The Preservation Hall Jazz Band has marked its 50th anniversary with star-studded celebration at New Orleans Jazz Festival.

On Sunday, the world-renowned band closed out 2012 New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival with two concerts featuring a number of old friends, including Allen Toussaint, Trombone Shorty, and Jazz Fest founder George Wein.

"New Orleans music is passed on through its traditions, with younger players learning from older ones," said Ben Jaffe, director of the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, in an interview with the Associated Press.

"That remains central to our mission and even today, 50 years later, it's a continuing goal to cast a spotlight on the old and young that's very much alive," Jaffe added.

Preservation Hall has served to preserve the heritage of New Orleans traditional jazz for five decades since it was founded by Allan and Sandra Jaffe in 1961. Originated as humble, the Hall became an international brand name in the field of jazz music.

Hall director and the founders’ son Ben Jaffe, 41, said his parents' goal was to make sure New Orleans' unique musical traditions would be kept alive.
