Hayden Panettiere Joins Protests In Ukraine After George Clooney Comments

Hayden Panettiere takes a cue from George Clooney and weighs in on the Ukrainian protests. The Nashville actress, 24, has taken to Twitter, television and the streets, to have her voice be heard and stand in solidarity with the Ukrainian opposition party.

Panettiere is engaged to Ukrainian boxer Wladimir Klitschko, whose brother is actually the leader of the opposition party in Kiev. Russia seems intent to keep the country under its control and away from the West and the European Union. The couple arrived on Dec. 8 to lend support to the protesters of the Russian-leaning government. Shortly after the plane landed, she tweeted:

“Amazing watching #WladimirKlitschko personally connect with the Ukrainian demonstrators #frontlines #Ukraine.”

A video, which appears to be shot on an iPhone, from ABC News, shows the former Heroes star addressing a crowd on the street. In it, she boldly sides with the protesters saying:

"The beauty of this country is breathtaking: the landscape, the beautiful churches. But nothing compares to the undeniably deep souls of the Ukrainian people. There is a movement happening here and we have a chance to make things right, to make things just. You have a right to a democracy. Your struggles and your fight is not falling on deaf ears. You are being heard. The world will hear you.”

The statement reflects views expressed by well known celebrity activist George Clooney earlier this month. Us Weekly quotes him as saying:

“You cannot have a democracy when you arrest and harm its peaceful protesters," he said. "You certainly cannot have a true democracy if you take political prisoners like [former Prime Minister Yulia] Tymoshenko, simply because you disagree with the way they want to govern. So let me just say this to all of you in the square in Kiev, or all around Ukraine: When you look to the West, know that we are looking back at you with great admiration.”

What about you? What do you think? Is the Ukraine too far East to ever be a part of the West? Or is Europe big enough for everybody?
