Toronto Ballerina and Daughter Escape Injury from National Storm

Stephanie Hutchison, first soloist with National Ballet Canada, narrowly escaped injury after a storm caused a tree to crash into her house Friday morning.

Hutchison protected her daughter's body with her own when the huge century-old oak tree fell and crashed into her house on Willow Ave, ripping a 2.5-meter hole in the roof above their bed. Incredibly, they were unharmed.

"I feel blessed. I definitely feel like God is watching out for me," she said to The Toronto Star. "You can build another wall, but you can't bring back me or my daughter."

The Canadian ballet star was sleeping in her bedroom with her 5-year-old daughter Charlotte at around 7 a.m. when she awoke to the crackling sound of the tree just before it fell. She said her first instinct was to shield her daughter when she heard the thunderous crash.

City officials have inspected the home and said it is structurally safe for the family to stay in the lower level of the house. The upper level had just been renovated two weeks ago, which is now almost entirely destroyed.

Hutchison, 41, also survived a car crash mere months ago. She only suffered a minor neck injury.
