Batman Vs Superman is about to begin production, and fans are still in the dark about who will be the big bad. New reports seem to suggest that Joaquin Phoenix could be the film's new villain. However, no one is sure of what role he would play. Where many suspect that he will be Lex Luthor, it is highly possible that he could be playing Matallo. In the meantime, fans are still holding out hope that Mad Men's Jon Hamm could be reprising his role as Luthor from his famous Funny or Die parody.
Well the rumor mill is abuzz that Joaquin Phoenix will be cast as Lex Luthor in the upcoming Batman Vs Superman. Phoenix is the latest name strewn about for the film. Where the reports are still unconfirmed, it has been well-established that Luthor is set to appear in the film.
An unnamed insider spoke with Comic Book Movies earlier in the year about Luthor's role in the film, saying:
“Zack Snyder's Lex Luthor isn't gonna be focusing on real estate, like he has in past Superman films. This time, Lex's motivations will be rooted on his belief that Superman is not good for mankind. The Lex that you will see, will resemble characteristics from Grant Morrison's All-Star Superman."
The source went on to give a possible spoiler for the film, adding:
“In one particular scene, Lex will ask his LexCorp scientists if they can recreate Kryptonian armor. Lex says to them, ‘When the world realizes what he truly is, they will need someone to stand up to him.’ When one of scientists ask if he is that someone, Lex replies, ‘Is there any other person who can?’”
However, it is entirely possible that Phoenix could be playing a completely different role, perhaps even Metallo. John “Metallo” Corban is a robotic Superman villain, who has also been tied to Batman's origins in the past. Metallo was also rumored to be in the Man of Steel.
If Phoenix is in fact playing Metallo, then that still leaves the question of who should play Lex Luthor. Some fans are still holding out hope that Jon Hamm will reprise his role as the dastardly villain from his famous Funny or Die Lex Corp Ball Out sketch.
