For the last few years, Jessica Lange has been Miss American Horror Story. The queen of the coven has been a tentpole of the series since Season 1. Now, Lange has announced that Season 4 will be her last for the time being. Lange will appear in the fourth season...but not in a starring role.
Jessica Lange has been a major part of every season of American Horror Story. The highly acclaimed actress stole the show in the first season. Unfortunately for fans, Lange has announced that she will be leaving the anthology series after the next season.
American Horror Story is unique, in that it is an anthology style series not seen much in modern day TV. The show’s ensemble cast plays different parts year after year, leaving the door open for characters to die or leave without any long term repercussions.
Jessica Lange has become synonymous with AHS, but even she couldn’t stay forever. Lange is taking advantage of the show’s format to make her exit.
Lange recently spoke with Entertainment Weekly about her decision to leave:
“It ends up being a lot of time during the year being committed to something. I haven't done that for a long time. It's like doing a stage play between the rehearsal and the run. This is a 6-month commitment every year. That will be four years in a row. I want to have more time to myself I guess. Once it's over and I have a full year ahead of me with nothing to do, who knows? It might not have been the best decision. But I think four years doing something is a sufficient amount of time.”
American Horror Story creator, Ryan Murphy, spoke with Vulture about Lange’s departure:
“I think being on a television show, even a cable show for 13 episodes, is a big grind. It’s really hard work. And I bought a play that Jessica’s going to do on Broadway, something she’s always wanted to do, so we’re going to do that after Season 4. And then? I don’t know. Maybe she has a year break, or maybe I can seduce her with a part. It depends on what she wants to do. She’s always been an actress who took a lot of time between projects.”
