Ant-Man is about to begin production and yet it is missing one key element…Ant-Man. We were promised an Ant-Man casting announcement by the end of the year and here we are--13 days into December--with only rumors. Paul Rudd is opening up about reports that he will play the pint-sized Avenger. Meanwhile, Edgar Wright’s good friend, Simon Pegg, is speaking out about why he would be a horrible choice for Hank Pym.
Paul Rudd is the rumor mill's frontrunner for the role of Ant-Man in the upcoming Marvel movie. Rudd recently spoke with Absolute Radio, where he addressed the rumors once and for all:
"Oh, that's all rumor, man...There's nothing I know. Sorry."
The comment sounds like your standard denial that doesn’t necessarily prove anything. However, Simon Pegg is adamant about not being involved in the film. Pegg is close friends with the movie’s director, Edgar Wright, and has worked with him on several projects in the past. Pegg recently spoke with SFX about not wanting to be a part of the flick:
"If I was Edgar, I wouldn’t cast me in Ant-Man, because I think he obviously has to spread his wings as a director and be seen not to just come with me as a package. Same with Nick. We need to do things separately so we don’t ultimately get seen as coming as a double act. You know, Ant-Man would be enormous fun to be in, but I think Ant-Man himself has to be a lot younger than me for a start. And there probably isn’t a part for me. If Edgar asked me, I’d think about it. But as his friend and his lawyer, I would advise strongly against asking me."
Edgar Wright also spoke about Ant-Man standing apart from the Avengers:
"I think they do stand alone. I think that’s what’s kind of clever about the movies, is that they work sort of like the comic books. They’re standalone stories, and there are elements that link them. But I think that’s what makes The Avengers the treat that it is--it’s bringing six disparate characters together."
