Former basketball player and one time bride, Dennis Rodman, will be headed back to North Korea for the third time in recent months this December 18. Mr. Rodman is going to help train the national basketball team (and to presumably increase his own net worth), in preparation for an upcoming exhibition game against more former NBA players. While there is no word yet as to whether or not Kim and Dennis will be getting together, the first of the two part event is scheduled for the leader’s January 8 birthday.
Mr Rodman has stated that--beyond trying to just stay relevant--he sees his trip much like any diplomatic envoy. The NBA player even indicated that he might save the world, as he tells USA Today:
“People put that label on me like it's my responsibility to save the world. If it happens to come to that, then yes, I guess I'm all for it. Let's just all get together and keep everything cool, man."
Rodman also discussed the motivations behind his trip with the New York Times. He denied allegations that he was in it for the money and claimed that he was doing it to bridge the gap between North Korea and the rest of the world:
"They need money. I'm not doing it for the money. I'm doing it to open a gap between North Korea and the world. And North Korea has a lot to offer. They want to branch out.”
While no one can be certain as to the validity of his claims to be Jung-Un’s friend, no one could possibly doubt the significance of the relationship in Rodman’s own mind.
"Just think, it's up to Dennis Rodman to break ground with North Korea. I'm the only one in the world who will go talk to this guy and try and find some common ground with these people. I'm hoping that gap between America and North Korea can close. Those guys love a lot about America. They love it. That's why I go over there.”
If Dennis Rodman truly is the only one able to bridge the ever-widening gap between North Korea and the United States, then that’s something to think about, indeed. Though an egomaniacal narcissus, who spent his formative years rich, powerful and privileged, just might make the perfect diplomatic match.
