Last month, Marvel announced a deal with Netflix to produce five series based around the company's Hell Kitchen heroes. Now it has been confirmed that Daredevil will be head up by Buffy writer Drew Goddard, and Jessica Jones will be ran by Twilight and Dexter’s Melissa Rosenberg.
Drew Goddard, a former Buffy the Vampire Slayer writer, has been confirmed as the showrunner for the new Daredevil series. Goddard fancies himself a DD fanboy, telling Collider:
"You’re talking to a guy who had quotes from Daredevil painted on his walls growing up. When I was 18 I still had the blood-red door with the ‘I have shown him that a man without hope is a man without fear,’ that was what I love. If we can find the right project, I’d love to do it.”
Meanwhile, Twilight and Dexter writer Melissa Rosenberg is taking the reigns of the Jessica Jones series.
The new series are a very big deal for the studio, as well as Netflix, who has already found success with original programming. Netflix Chief Content Officer, Ted Sarandos, released a statement about the deal:
"Marvel’s movies, such as Iron Man and Marvel’s The Avengers, are huge favorites on our service around the world. Like Disney, Marvel is a known and loved brand that travels. With 'House of Cards' and our other original series, we have pioneered new approaches to storytelling and to global distribution and we're thrilled to be working with Disney and Marvel to take our brand of television to new levels with a creative project of this magnitude."
.
Alan Fine, Marvel’s Entertainment president, added:
"This deal is unparalleled in its scope and size, and reinforces our commitment to deliver Marvel's brand, content and characters across all platforms of storytelling. Netflix offers an incredible platform for the kind of rich storytelling that is Marvel’s specialty. This serialized epic expands the narrative possibilities of on-demand television and gives fans the flexibility to immerse themselves how and when they want in what's sure to be a thrilling and engaging adventure."
