NBC is kicking off the Christmas season with a bang. Last night, Mariah Carey and Ariana Grande belted it out at The Rockefeller Center tree lighting, and tonight Carrie Underwood performs The Sound of Music Live.
Sound of Music producer Craig Zadan recently spoke with The Hollywood Reporter about NBC’s big week:
“We have the most nerve-racking week because Dec. 5 is The Sound of Music and Dec. 8 and 9 are Bonnie & Clyde. Within a few days, we have three nights of television that are quite large and under scrutiny, and I think people will be looking to see how they are going to do. We love the idea of having event television. It's always appealed to us. To see The Sound of Music live, which hasn't been a live musical since the '50s, is historic.”
The performance stars county queen Carrie Underwood as Maria. Co-Producer Neil Meron spoke about Underwood’s casting:
“The first person we cast was Carrie Underwood. Everything sprung from that. Carrie was our first choice from day one because we felt we loved the surprise of Carrie as an actress. We also felt that Carrie was Maria. She has all of the qualities of Maria. What we've learned is she is a really fast learner. She just wants to dive in and spread her wings a little bit more in other aspects of the entertainment business.”
The Sound of Music airs tonight at 8.
Meanwhile, NBC kicked off its world famous lighting of the tree in Rockefeller Center last night. Among the performers were Mariah Carey and Ariana Grande. Grande is often compared to Carey, and the two got to share the stage at last night’s festivities. Grande isn’t just following in Carey’s footsteps vocally, the singer/actress is about to release her very own Christmas E.P. titled Christmas Kisses. The new record will be released on December 10, however, three tracks have already been released including a cover of Wham’s classic “ Last Christmas.”
