Marvel comics may have taken the early lead in the film business, but DC has been the undisputed King of TV. Marvel finally entered the small screen arena this year with their Avengers spin-off, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. However, DC is way ahead of the game with its hit series, Arrow. Now both companies have announced several new TV projects. Who will come out ahead in the war for superhero supremacy?
Marvel’s new live action series Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D was the company's first step into today's age of small screen entertainment. Now the studio is jumping in the TV world with both feet. Last month, the company announced a landmark deal with Netflix to bring four new series to the streaming service, as well as a mini-series. The new shows will focus on the Hell’s Kitchen heroes: Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist. The mini-series will be about the team-up group known as The Defenders. There were several incarnations of The Defenders in the past, so it is unknown what members the new show will feature.
Marvel’s Entertainment President, Alan Fine, first announced the deal in a statement to the press:
"This deal is unparalleled in its scope and size, and reinforces our commitment to deliver Marvel's brand, content and characters across all platforms of storytelling. Netflix offers an incredible platform for the kind of rich storytelling that is Marvel’s specialty. This serialized epic expands the narrative possibilities of on-demand television and gives fans the flexibility to immerse themselves how and when they want in what's sure to be a thrilling and engaging adventure."
DC has been in the series small screen game for over ten years. The company's first major modern day hit was the Superman origin series Smallville. Last year, DC released its newest show, Arrow. The show became a breakaway hit that is leading to a spin-off series based around The Flash.
DC isn’t going to end there. The company has recently announced several new series including: Wonder Woman and Batman prequels, titled Amazon and Gotham. The company is also planning a series based around Hellblazer John Constantine, JLA’s Hourman and iZombie.
