Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy is on its way and now the two of the film’s stars, Walking Dead vet Michael Rooker and The Hobbit 2’s Lee Pace, are opening up about their roles as Youndu and Ronan.
The Walking Dead’s Michael Rooker plays Yondu, one of the founding members of the Guardians. Rooker recently spoke to ScienceFiction.com about working with his old friend James Gunn:
“It's felt like a James Gunn movie as soon as he called me about it! I went out and bagged a comic just to see what he was doing, and I was like 'Oh my God, he's doing this! I was very happy because he's a big comic guy, even as a young child he really enjoyed reading them, so it was great to see him doing something that really got his creative energy going...He loves to torture me and make me look strange. Directors always love to tell actors what to do, and he loves telling me what to do, and that’s why he hired me!”
Rooker recently spoke with Man Cave Daily about his new role:
“I’m really excited about the movie I just finished, Guardians of the Galaxy--it’s a big Marvel superhero film. I play Yondu and it’s a beautiful kick-ass role. It’s right up my alley but the only thing that I can say about the role now is that I’m blue.”
He also added that his physicality has helped his career:
“My training in Aikido helped me tremendously--when you’re punching and kicking and being thrown…there have been times when the director wanted me to run and jump and fall off backwards onto concrete--no way you can do that without some training…And yeah, insurance companies don’t want you doing that, but Hong Kong directors want it so yeah, go for it--hopefully not too many takes to get it done though…"
Meanwhile, the film's main villain is Ronan the Accuser, played by Hobbit 2 star, Lee Pace. Pace recently opened up to SciFiNow about the contrast between the two movies:
“The characters couldn’t be more different! I remember walking on set [of Guardians of the Galaxy], and I was like ‘Very un-elfy, right guys?’ [Ronan] is a real psychopathic beast. I’m having the best time playing it. I kept looking over at James Gunn when we were shooting, ‘Too much? Should I pull back?’ He’s like ‘No, more, go for it!”
