Composer Dave Malloy wants to bring his vision to life.
The 48-year-old Ohio native has initiated a community-backed crowdfunding project to produce a concept album for his latest theatrical creation, "Three Houses."
The musical Malloy created featured music direction by his frequent collaborator, Or Matias, debuting at Signature Theatre in New York City this year.
Due to popular demand, the show's Off-Broadway run was extended several times before ending on June 16.
He said in the Kickstarter campaign, "Recordings remain one of the most vital parts of the musical theatre tradition."
In discussing the financial aspect of theatre recordings, Malloy stressed the challenging reality that these projects rarely generate enough revenue to cover their expenses. He explained the costs involved are typically excessive, while the audience, albeit dedicated and delightful, remains relatively limited in size.
The performer went on to say that in theater productions, commercial producers play a crucial role in securing funding for Broadway shows, providing a valuable resource for promoting the productions during their initial run and the tours. But for smaller, more intimate performances, the responsibility of raising funds often falls on the shoulders of the creators themselves.
He further said in the campaign, "The actual total budget for the Three Houses album is about $70,000; we have a very generous commitment for about half of that, but we need to raise the rest, or $33,333."
In exchange for those who pledged support, Malloy said he will be giving incentives for backers.
As of writing, the crowdfunding has $29,446.
The narrative of this production follows the lives of three individuals in separate isolation during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Each character grapples with their inner struggles while accompanied by unique puppet companions.
