Manhattan Theatre Club has announced three more world premieres for the off-Broadway stage for its upcoming 2024-25 season.
MTC will present three productions, including 'Bad Kreyol,' written by Tony nominee Dominique Morisseau (Ain't Too Proud, Skeleton Crew), directed by Tiffany Nichole Green, 'We Had a World,' written by Pulitzer finalist Joshua Harmon (Bad Jews, Prayer for the French Republic), directed by Trip Cullman, and 'Dakar 2000,' written by Pulitzer finalist Rajiv Joseph (Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo, King James).
'Bad Kreyol,' co-produced by Signature Theatre, revolves around the reunion of first-generation Haitian American Simone with her cousin Gigi, who was born and raised in Haiti. It explores cultural identity and global effect.
'Dakar 2000,' a world premiere thriller commissioned by MTC, will launch in Senegal on the eve of Y2K. A bizarre car accident that leaves a Peace Corps volunteer alive leads to an odd friendship between him and an intimidating State Department agent. The volunteer is drawn into a more sinister side of public service as it becomes clear that they both have secrets. Performances of the play will start in the winter of 2025.
In 'We Had a World,' a dying woman requests her grandson to write a play about their family. "But I want you to promise me something," she says. "Make it as bitter and vitriolic as possible."
The playwright of 'Prayer for the French Republic' from the previous season recreates thirty years of family arguments, horrible behavior, extreme brutality, and unwavering love in this searing, humorous, and intensely intimate production. Performances will start in 2025.
Artistic Director Lynne Meadow said playwrights Joshua Harmon, Rajiv Joseph, and Dominique Morriseau will return to MTC with these world premieres. She noted that they believe their work represents the best of new American playwriting and are thrilled to collaborate with them again.
Tony Award nominee Chris Jennings also said they are looking forward to co-producing with Signature Theatre, their fellow not-for-profit whose Artistic Director, Paige Evans, began her career at MTC. He claimed that they would be able to share Morriseau's beautiful play with loyal audiences at both of her theatrical homes.
The show's creative team, casting, and other details will be revealed at a later date.
The MTC Spring Gala will take place on Monday, May 19, 2025, at Cipriani 42nd Street.
