The Marías is back with their sophomore album, entitled "Submarine." Released with it is one of the album's tracks, "Run Your Mouth," and its accompanying music video.
Earlier, the band released the tracks, "No One Noticed" and "If Only."
In "Submarine," the Marías dives into the depths of human emotion and isolation, taking inspiration from, among others, the breakup between band members María Zardoya and Josh Conway. "This album is about embracing solitude and all the emotions that come with it. It's a journey through the depths of the soul," Zardoya remarked.
Of the track, "Run Your Mouth," released with the album's announcement, she says: "This was one of the first songs Josh and I wrote on 'Submarine.' I was conflict avoidant at the time, and whenever someone wanted to talk about something serious, I'd run and hide. I learned that was a protective mechanism and I didn't have the capacity to open up. There's no other song on the album like it."
The album has received much praise since its release last May 31, with Stereogum describing its music as "funky, jazzy, loungey, dreamy pop that never lets its atmospheric qualities drift into sleepy nothingness," adding, "Submarine' takes you deep." From Alternative Press: "Submarine is a daring but necessary departure...[the record] turns inward, plunging deep below the surface to explore a torrent of demanding thoughts and feelings in search of an inner calm.
It comes three years after the release of their lauded debut album, "Cinema." The Marías will embark on their Submarine Tour on June 11, starting in Mexico City and ending in Los Angeles on August 23. They will then take "Submarine" to Europe starting late October.
