This weekend, Red Bull Origin celebrates the roots of skateboarding at one of the sport's cradles: Venice Beach, Los Angeles.
Kicking off the festivities is a Bowl Jam, opening 5 PM today, May 31 at Venice Beach Skatepark.
This is followed by the art show, Artful Dodgers, mounted in partnership with Juice Magazine, and sponsored by Zig-Zag. Running from 7 PM to 10 PM, the one-night exhibit features paintings, photographs and mixed media works by boarding giants, Jim Ganzer, Craig Stecyk III, Stacy Peralta, Steve Olson and Lance Mountain. All their pieces will celebrate skateboarding and surfing, as well as the making of art from the 1960s to the present. It takes place at the Rose Room, 6 Rose Avenue. Completing the atmosphere is music from guest DJ, Scott Oster.
Curating Artful Dodgers is skating legend Steve Olson, who introduced skateboarding to punk rock in the late 1970s. Proceeds will benefit the Dolphin Project, a non-profit organization dedicated to ending the exploitation and slaughter of dolphins.
From May 31 to June 2, Red Bull Origin also mounts three days of skate contests, including head-to-head death races, best trick competitions, and a wall ride contest hosted by Christian Hosoi. The prize purse amounts to $50,000.
Red Bull says of the event: "Skateboarding's origin story could not be described without mention of the sunny streets and vibrant culture of Venice Beach, California. In the 1970s, the Santa Monica/Venice Beach area (also known as Dogtown) became a breeding ground for the Z-Boys and similar groups, birthing the punk and skate subcultures that reverberate through skateboarding today."
