Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter Aloe Blacc has released a funky, soulful cover of Nirvana's "Lithium"-part of his forthcoming project, "Rock My Soul Volume 1." The collection is the first installment of Blacc's two-part EP series featuring his covers of iconic '90s alternative rock anthems rendered in his signature light, jazzy style.
This cover is the second installment of Blacc's #TakeMeBackTuesday campaign, where he releases one track every Tuesday in the weeks leading up to the full project's launch on June 7. His recording of "Lithium" follows his release of "Black Hole Sun," originally by Soundgarden, last week.
Volume 1 will also feature No Doubt's "Don't Speak," Red Hot Chili Peppers' "Under The Bridge," and Green Day's "When I Come Around."
Blacc told Culture Trip in 2018: "Even though rock is a derivative of blues, there's a different character. Blues is more laid-back and relaxed and contemplative, where rock is more expressive and deliberate. And I think that with those kinds of things, you get a sense of the people from the sound and style of music."
Of 'Rock My Soul,' he said: "I've always been drawn to the emotional depth and powerful messages in these songs. With [it], I wanted to honor the originals while also bringing my own perspective to the music. I can't wait for everyone to hear it."
'Rock My Soul' is just one of Blacc's significant projects for 2024. Earlier this year, he partnered with the Aurora Humanitarian Initiative in the song, "Shine," at their 2024 Prize ceremony in Los Angeles celebrating humanitarian efforts worldwide.
Blacc's two upcoming EPs were produced by Otis McDonald, with whom he partnered for the single, "Simple Man," in February.
