Wesley Dean Explores Toxic Masculinity As An Outlaw On The Run In Newly Released Music Video For ‘Gunslinger’

Today, Nashville-based Aussie artist Wesley Dean releases a new gritty, western-esque music video for his "Gunslinger" track off his latest album: "Music From Crazy Hearts," recorded at the historic RCA Studio A.

The album arrived last month and has since received plenty of acclaim from the likes of CMT, Holler, BrooklynVegan, Whiskey Riff, The Bluegrass Situation, and many more.

About Wesley Dean's Music Video for 'Gunslinger'

The video itself sees Dean portraying a weathered outlaw on a journey across the harsh desert and was consequently shot in the California desert towns of Joshua Tree and Pioneertown amid the artist's Crazy Hearts Across America tour.

This was also the same period where Dean and his family packed into an RV with a director and cameraperson in tow and journeyed over 5,000 miles from Nashville to LA, going through towns steeped in musical history and playing shows in venues along the road less traveled.

All of the trip was then captured and turned into a full-length feature film: "Crazy Hearts: The Documentary," which is slated to release in 2025.

Director Jacobie Gray said of the MV: "We wanted to go full Western. So I was thrilled to capture the epic moment of Wes slaying his guitar on the rock in Joshua Tree at dusk. And we had no lighting or fancy gear on tour, just a camera and the dying light of the day."

"'Gunslinger' is an exploration of what it means to be a man struggling with the masculine identity passed down from father to son," Dean shares.

"I hope the discussion around 'Gunslinger' will inspire men to take a deeper look at the intergenerational trauma impacting their lives, and initiate a self-awareness that gives them [the] freedom to have more connected relationships with themselves and others," he added.

Other songs from "Music From Crazy Hearts" are centered on Dean's own story of breaking the industry mold to carve out his name independently, which include "Mercy," "Blood Brothers," "Don't Look Back," and its lead single "Burn This House."
