Sir Karl Jenkins believed he would lead the Royal Scottish National Orchestra in a performance of his 1995 composition, 'Palladio,' at Classic FM Live when he went to the podium at the Royal Albert Hall.

However, as it happened, the orchestra had a completely different idea. The conductor was caught off guard when the musicians, having played the first few bars as planned, seamlessly transitioned into a symphonic version of 'Happy Birthday,' joined in fine voice by the RSNO Chorus.

The 5,000-person crowd erupted in cheers for the Welsh maestro as Alexander Armstrong and Myleene Klass, hosts of the evening's event on Classic FM, walked onto the stage carrying a dish of two incredibly delicious cakes.

"Happy birthday, Sir Karl - surprise!" Myleene announced. "We're going to go and cut this cake, and you're gonna get on with the concert!"

"Oh, I've got to start it again now!" Jenkins joked.

"Yes, but we can't get enough of you," Myleene responded.

Ben Palmer, the orchestra conductor, created the amazing arrangement for the rest of the evening.

As part of his 80th birthday celebrations in 2024, Jenkins conducted his 'Benedictus' from 'The Armed Man,' 'Palladio,' and 'Adiemus' in the Royal Albert Hall for Classic FM Live with Viking.

He held the title of the most performed living composer for several years and had his compositions played at His Majesty King Charles III's coronation in 2023.

Furthermore, just a month before, Jenkins performed the 3,000th performance of 'The Armed Man' on the same prestigious stage. The multi-talented artist also celebrated his 8th decade in an exclusive interview with Classic FM's John Humphrys, during which he revealed that his hit song 'Adiemus' had been a "rush job."
