Last Monday, April 22, Omnivore Recordings announced the expanded reissue of Skeeter Davis and NRBQ's collaborative country pop album: "She Sings, They Play," out on June 7 on LP, CD, and Digital.
About 'She Sings, They Play' by Skeeter Davis and NRBQ
Following her work with Betty Jack Davis in The Davis Sisters, Skeeter pursued what would become quite a storied solo career.
For one, she eventually charted 40 singles starting from 1957 to 1974, with her Chet Atkins-produced recording of "The End Of The World" peaking at No. 2 on both the Pop and Country charts; No. 1 on Adult Contemporary; and No. 4 on R&B charts by 1962.
With her cross-genre experience in tow, and after having been reinvigorated and affirmed by her success in doing so, Skeeter's collaboration with the NRBQ rock band came as no surprise.
NRBQ Founder and pianist Terry Adams first learned of Skeeter's work with her time on Davis Sisters, a band whose "78 RPM" record saw some of its tracks seep into the early NRBQ setlists from time to time.
Hence, why the pairing between the rock act and the cross-genre singer was a no-brainer, and from their collaboration came the album: "She Sings, They Play," which was released to critical acclaim in 1985.
"We had more fun making this record. What other group would think to do 'Someday My Prince Will Come' in 4/4 time?," asked Skeeter Davis.
Now, nearly 40 years after its inaugural release, "She Sings, They Play" is getting remastered and is being rereleased alongside six originally unissued bonus tracks, two of which comprise studio outtakes that will appear on the LP and four live tracks that are currently available on CD and Digital versions.
The packaging also contains an updated album artwork, some session photos, and liner notes from John DeAngelis.
