New ‘Mountain Stage’ Compilation of Live Performances to Feature Tyler Childers, Wilco, and Others

Last Friday, April 19, NPR Music and West Virginia Public Broadcasting's famed live performance radio show "Mountain Stage" released their new compilation: "Live On Mountain Stage: Outlaws and Outliers."

Out now through Oh Boy Records, the expansive album comprises iconic live performances from various artists that appeared on the show across its four-decade-long run.

Such musical acts include Margo Price, John Prine, Birds of Chicago featuring Allison Russell, Sierra Ferrell, Jason Isbell, and Molly Tuttle, among many others.

About 'Live On Mountain Stage: Outlaws and Outliers'

Ahead of the compilation's release, Mountain Stage shared a recording of Tyler Childers' live performance of "Going Home," an unreleased track exclusively available in the fresh album and recorded during the Americana singer-songwriter's 2015 appearance at the radio show.

This particular release, however, is only a follow-up to the record's lead single shared earlier this year, featuring Chicago-based alt-rock band Wilco's live iteration of David Bowie's "Space Oddity," which they performed in 2016.

The cover's release date coincides with Bowie's 77th birthday last January 8. In a statement reflecting their performance, Wilco said: "As a gratefully, if not begrudgingly, Earth-bound band, it's always an honor and a challenge to tackle any of David Bowie's space-soaring arrangements."

"Striving to reach the heights of his freedom and talent is a wise goal for any band. We thank Mountain Stage for letting us give this song another home on Earth," they continued.

After being established in 1983, Mountain Stage has since been home to eclectic performances, as exemplified by the show's recent advanced singles off their new compilation, which propelled the broadcast into its status as one of the most beloved and enduring programs in public radio history.

"For over 40 years, Mountain Stage has been one of the most prominent voices in both the promotion and celebration of roots music," said Oh Boy Records' Jody Whelan.

"This record showcases some of the most legendary performances from the show's history, but also looks to the future and highlights a new generation of performers we'll be celebrating for the next 40 years," added Whelan.
