A New Addition to Anna Handler's Notable Achievements

The BSO appoints two active assistant conductors at any given period. Thus, Handler will join Samy Rachid, who was appointed to the post in 2023. The German-Colombian conductor will also take over Earl Lee's post, following the approaching end of his tenure with the orchestra.

Currently, Handler is in the middle of fulfilling her role as a Dudamel Fellow alongside the Los Angeles Philharmonic. She also recently graduated last year from The Juilliard School and trained as a conductor under David Robertson.

Handler will be making and has made several debuts under some of the most prestigious ensembles in the classical music world during the ongoing season.

This includes performing with the aforementioned LA Philharmonic, Minnesota Orchestra, North Carolina Symphony, BBC Philharmonic, Grazer Philharmoniker, and the Münchner Rundfunkorchester.

She has also been in a leadership role as the founder and director of Enigma Classica. This technologically forward classical ensemble has featured acclaimed soloists like Arabella Steinbacher, Daniel Müller-Schott, and Sabine Meyer.

BSO and Anna Handler's Thoughts on the New Position

According to BSO's press release regarding Handler's new position, the German-Colombian conductor said: "It is an immense honor to be joining the Boston Symphony Orchestra as assistant conductor."

"The storied history and unique sound of this orchestra fascinate me, and I cannot wait to dive deep into the orchestra's approach to music," she continued. "I greatly look forward to working with Music Director Andris Nelsons and the musicians and connecting with the community of Boston."

BSO's Music Director and Head of Conducting at Tanglewood, Andris Nelsons, was also quoted and he said: "The assistant conductors are an important part of our musical community here, and I'm very pleased to welcome Anna to our BSO family."

He added that BSO thought highly of Handler's "maturity and ability to communicate," particularly with the orchestra members performing under her direction, and that he "looks forward to working with her in the coming years."
