The Broadway comedy production "Gutenberg! The Musical," which saw the reunion of former "The Book of Mormon" stars Josh Gad and Andrew Rannells, has recouped its initial investment of $6.75 million over a 20-week run, according to Playbill.
In addition to this, the musical has once again broken the box office record at the James Earl Jones Theatre, after it had grossed a total of $1,463,226 in its final week. Its prior record was made during last year's last week grosses, where it earned $1,280,597.
Following the show's huge successes, it has now announced an original Broadway cast recording which will be released this coming spring.
Updates for the 'Gutenberg! The Musical!' Broadway Production
The cast recording will be distributed under Center Stage Records and Yellow Sound Label, with pre-orders now open. In addition, the album will be produced and mixed by Michael Croiter, a twelve-time Emmy Award recipient and three-time Grammy nominee.
Marcia Goldberg and Andrew Paradis will act as executive producers for the projects. Helping Croiter as co-producers are the Broadway show's composers, Anthony King and Scott Brown, with help from Van Dean and Marco Paguia.
T.O. Sterett will be handling arrangements, orchestrations, and overall music supervision alongside the vocal supervision of Liz Caplan and the music direction of Paguia.
The musical comedy first opened last Oct. 12 shortly after holding previews on Sept. 15, and finished its 20-week run last Sunday, Jan. 28.
What is 'Gutenberg! The Musical!' About?
The show's story is centered around Gad and Rannells' characters, respectively named "Bud" and "Doug," and their journey of making the musical about the father of the printing press himself, Johannes Gutenberg, a reality.
In a meta performance, the two guys hold a "backers only" show where they play all the roles, which is shown through hundreds of baseball caps with the character names written on them.
Each night, the show features a celebrity cameo to don the "Famous Broadway Producer" cap and includes Tony-winning performers, film actors, and even political personalities like Hillary Clinton.
On its final night on Broadway, the production featured an appearance from six-time Tony-winning actress Audra McDonald.
