Talks of "BOOP! The Betty Boop Musical" coming to Broadway next year in spring have been spreading, following the appearance of the production's lead, Amy Rogers, in an interview with WNBC's New York Live where she announced the transferral.
In her statement, she said: "We are coming to Broadway in Spring 2025, which is very exciting that we can say that." However, according to a report by Playbill, it may still not be confirmed yet.
'The Betty Boop Musical' is Still in the Prep Stage for the Transferral
According to the statement of production representatives to the American theatre magazine, the show's transferral isn't officially set in stone at the moment.
That said, everyone involved in the show, as per the representatives, is hoping to push its Broadway transfer, even if the plans are not yet finalized. This means the Spring 2025 goal is still within reach, although a lot can happen within one year that could push the production back.
In short, the "BOOP!" show is still in the preparation stage, and formal Broadway dates and the theatre location are not yet settled.
If there's anything to hold onto, it's the critical acclaim the show generated at the tail-end of last year as it launched a world premiere at Chicago's CIBC Theatre.
Of Rogers' performance as the baby-faced icon that is "Betty Boop," Chris Jones of the Chicago Tribune said that her performance was "astonishingly fleshed-out" despite being a relatively new face within the theatre space.
Catey Sullivan from the Chicago Sun Times echoed this positive sentiment by giving props to Rogers' ability to capture attention as the "star" of the show even if only her head is visible, as her body is represented by cartoon drawings in the first few parts of the "A Little Versatility" musical number.
For Sullivan, the lead is already "the complete Broadway package" with her amazing vocal performance as underscored by legendary composer David Foster and Susan Birkenhead's "rich-sounding" music.
The production itself is directed and choreographed by Tony winner Jerry Mitchell, who worked in "Kinky Boots" and "La Cages aux Folles," and is now, adapting a musical directly based on the famous 1930s characters made by Max Fleischer.
The show's narrative intuitively follows the story of "Betty" who goes on a colorful and musical adventure filled with love in the city of New York, after yearning for a brief escapade away from her super-stardom life.
As per he show's official website, on this trip, she is reminded of the overarching message of her world: "You are capable of amazing things."
