Robert Downey Jr has only signed up for Avengers 2 and 3, however, talk of Iron Man 4 is popping up everywhere. Could RDJ come back for another film, or will he be replaced by someone like Mark Wahlberg? Meanwhile, Terrence Howard is blaming RDJ for ruining his role as War Machine.
Marvel’s president of production, Kevin Feige, recently spoke with Collider about the future of the Iron Man franchise, with or without Robert Downey Jr.:
“I’ve said it before and it wasn’t negotiating tactics. I believe Tony Stark is as strong a character as Batman. We’re about to head into our fifth or sixth Batman--however, you wanna look at it--James Bond, etc. So, there will absolutely be future Tony Starks and future Iron Mans. Who makes those movies, and when those movies are made, who knows? I don’t know. But, the notion with Robert’s contract in The Avengers 2 & 3, is to allow new characters. Part of what we love about The Avengers is the shifting roster. That’s what’s fun about the comic book movies. You shift them up. So, certainly that was a lot of the thought process that went into it.”
One of the actors rumored to replace RDJ is Mark Wahlberg, although, he was the one who started the rumor in the first place. Wahlberg revealed his desire to dawn the armor during a recent interview promoting his new film 2 Guns:
“I would like to take over the Iron Man franchise for Robert Downey. [But] it’s one of those things where I kind of like playing real people, [so] I’ve never been asked."
Tony Stark wouldn’t be the first role to be recast in the MCU. Edward Norton was recast as the Hulk, with Mark Ruffalo taking over the part in the Avengers. Terrence Howard was also replaced by Don Cheadle as War Machine in the Iron Man franchise. Howard was recently on Bravo's Watch What Happens Live, where he opened up about why his role was recast:
“It turns out that the person that I helped become Iron Man, when it was time to re-up for the second one, took the money that was supposed to go to me and pushed me out."
Howard went on to give specific details:
"We did a three-picture deal. That means you did the deal ahead of time--a certain amount for the first one, a certain amount for the second, a certain amount for the third. They came to me with the second and said 'look, we will pay you one-eighth of what we contractually had for you, because we think the second one will be successful with or without you.' And I called my friend, that I helped get the first job, and he didn't call me back for three months.”
